How to win the Queen’s Award for Enterprise

Specac make devices that play a crucial role in science and industry, helping scientists and technicians in laboratories around the world analyse the chemical make-up of a huge range of substances: liquids, solids or gases. Their accessories for spectrometers are sold in 70 countries and their export sales are up 150% in the last five years. Specac are based in Orpington, Kent, with offices in the US.

Editing Edge wrote their successful entry for the 2018 Queen’s Award for Enterprise (QAE), the world’s most prestigious business award, in conjunction with Awards Intelligence.


The Problem

Most companies only get one stab at the QAE.  The submission process is rigid with strict word counts for each section.  When you realise the sheer amount of information that the judges require in such a condensed form you soon realise why it’s so difficult to compile the entry.

It’s vital to get it right first time. If you miss the deadline, you can’t enter for another year – by which time turnover might have dipped, rendering the company ineligible.

And the entry needs to wow. My job is to tell a story and keep the judges agog from beginning to end.

The Answer

I had to conduct in-depth research into Specac and assimilate all aspects of the business from financials to technical operations and export strategy.

It was important to make the information as digestible as possible, weaving in the human element, telling stories and using testimonials.

The Result

We are delighted to say that Specac won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, announced on the Queen’s birthday on 21 April.

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the world’s most prestigious business awards, carrying the imprimatur of Her Majesty and given only to companies or individuals who are outstanding in their field.

Winning and putting the logo on products will bring Specac prestige, increased reputation and, of course, improved sales.
